(NEXSTAR) \u2014 Who knew the opera and ballet industries were so gangster? Days after comments actor Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet made seemingly dissing both art forms went viral, companies and performers from both industries have clapped back hard.<\/p>\n
It all started after part of a one-on-one chat with Chalmet and \u201cInterstellar\u201d co-star Matthew McConaughey hit social media. During the Variety and CNN Town Hall, hosted at the University of Texas Austin, the actors started talking about the current issue of movie studios putting big action sequences at the beginning of movies, rather than letting tension build.<\/p>\n
While both actors lamented the loss of audiences with better attention spans, Chalamet then said he did understand the reasoning, partly, saying: \u201cSome people want to be entertained quickly. I\u2019m really right in the middle, because I admire people [saying], \u2018Hey, we gotta keep movie theaters alive. We gotta keep this genre alive.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Somewhat jokingly, Chalamet elaborated, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be working in ballet or opera where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore\u2019 \u2014 all respect to the ballet and opera people out there.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the days since the clip went viral, the \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d Academy Award nominee, has faced criticism from multiple fronts and from some of the world\u2019s most prestigious opera and ballet houses.<\/p>\n
The Metropolitan Opera, The Paris Opera, and Royal Ballet and Opera all tagged the actor in various call-out posts. New York City Ballet principal dancer Megan Fairchild took the 30 year-old to task, saying he couldn\u2019t possibly \u201cpursue these Olympic-level artistic fields in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seattle Opera took the Chala-melee a step further this weekend, posting a new promotion directly tied to the incident. In its post, the Washington-based opera house wrote: \u201cAll we\u2019ve got to say is\u2026 use promo code \u2018TIMOTHEE\u2019 to save 14% off select seats for \u2018Carmen,\u2019 through this weekend only. Timmy, you\u2019re welcome to use it too \ud83d\udc83 See you at the opera!\u201d<\/p>\n
So far, Chalamet has not released a statement to the backlash.<\/p>\n
The\u00a098th Academy Awards\u00a0will be held March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Chalamet will vie for the Best Actor award against fellow nominees Michael B. Jordan (\u201cSinners\u201d), Wagner Moura (\u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d), Ethan Hawke (\u201cBlue Moon\u201d) and Leonardo DiCaprio (\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d).<\/p>\n
