(The Hill) \u2014 Actress Daryl Hannah sharply condemned her depiction in the John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-centered \u201cLove Story\u201d TV series, calling it \u201cfalse\u201d and \u201ctextbook misogyny\u201d in a New York Times opinion piece published on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show,\u201d Hannah wrote in her op-ed. \u201cThese are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct \u2014 and they are false.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The new Ryan Murphy-directed \u201cLove Story\u201d on FX follows Kennedy and Bessette, who married in 1996 and tragically died in a plane crash three years later. <\/p>\n
One character in the show, played by Dree Hemingway, uses Hannah\u2019s name and presents as the actress, who dated Kennedy between 1988 and 1994.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue,\u201d the real-life Hannah writes. \u201cI have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties. I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone\u2019s private memorial. I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis\u2019 death to a dog\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n
She criticized that her portrayal in the show as \u201cirritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate,\u201d saying it was both inaccurate and \u201cno accident.\u201d Nina Jacobson, one of the producers of the series, has argued that Hannah\u2019s character is a necessary \u201cadversary\u201d to the main storyline of the romance between Bessette and Kennedy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Hannah responded that she understands that \u201cstorytelling requires tension\u201d but argued that \u201ca real, living person is not a narrative device.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen entertainment borrows a real person\u2019s name, it can permanently impact her reputation,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cPopular culture has long elevated certain women by portraying others as rivals, obstacles or villains,\u201d Hannah said. \u201cIsn\u2019t it textbook misogyny to tear down one woman in order to build up another?\u201d<\/p>\n
Though the show is inspired by Elizabeth Beller\u2019s book, \u201cOnce Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,\u201d Hannah argued many people can\u2019t distinguish fiction from fact, making them see her portrayal as a true representation of her real character.<\/p>\n
Hannah said since the show premiered on Feb. 12, she has received a string of \u201chostile\u201d and \u201ceven threatening\u201d messages from viewers. <\/p>\n
She said she was advised by Onassis before she died that while publications often sold \u201cridiculous lies\u201d about public figures, few people continued caring about them the next day. Hannah said she found \u201cgreat comfort and consolation in those words\u201d but argued that they \u201cno longer hold true\u201d in the digital age where social media preserves and digs up stories from the past forever.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cA dramatized portrayal can become, for millions of viewers, the definitive version of a real person\u2019s life,\u201d she said\u00a0<\/p>\n
