Psychedelic rock legend Joseph Allen \u201cCountry Joe\u201d McDonald has died at the age of 84.<\/p>\n

McDonald, who was known for fronting the sixties group Country Joe and the Fish, famously led the crowd at the 1969 Woodstock festival in the anti-Vietnam War protest anthem \u201cI-Feel-Like-I\u2019m-Fixin\u2019-to-Die Rag.\u201d The solo performance included the \u201cFish Cheer,\u201d a call-and-response to \u201cGimme an F\u201d that prompted the audience to spell out \u201cf***.\u201d<\/p>\n

The singer and songwriter died of Parkinson\u2019s disease Saturday in Berkeley, California, according to his wife, Kathy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are deeply saddened to report the passing of Country Joe McDonald, who died yesterday, March 7th, at the age of 84, in Berkeley, California, due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease,\u201d the band said in an official statement Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was surrounded by his family, and the news has been confirmed by Best Classic Bands,<\/em> as well as the McDonald Family,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cAt this time, the McDonald Family requests privacy during this very difficult period. McDonald co-founded Country Joe and the Fish in 1965 with Barry \u201cThe Fish\u201d Melton, who was the group\u2019s lead guitarist.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco-based band\u2019s songs often centered on political and social issues, including their song \u201cSuperbird,\u201d which satirically took aim at former President Lyndon B. Johnson, and their track \u201cAn Untitled Protest.\u201d Their first EP, released in 1965, was titled Talking Issue No. 1: Songs of Opposition.<\/p>\n

The group also put out hit songs like \u201cNot So Sweet Martha Lorraine\u201d and \u201cJanis,\u201d which was written for McDonald\u2019s late ex-girlfriend Janis Joplin.<\/p>\n

McDonald\u2019s career spanned over half a century, and he was known for his social activism and support specifically for Vietnam War veterans throughout the years. In addition to his works with the psychedelic rock band, the artist wrote and recorded at least 40 albums during his solo career.<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife and five children.<\/p>\n
