Rosanna Arquette is speaking out against Quentin Tarantino\u2019s excessive usage of the N-word in his films.<\/p>\n
Arquette, who played Jody, the girlfriend of drug dealer Lance (played by Eric Stoltz) in Pulp Fiction<\/em>, reflected on her role in the cult classic 1994 film during an interview with The Times of London <\/em>published Saturday.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s iconic, a great film on a lot of levels,\u201d the actor, 66, told the outlet about the movie. <\/p>\n \u201cBut personally I am over the use of the N-word \u2014 I hate it. I cannot stand that [Tarantino] has been given a hall pass. It\u2019s not art, it\u2019s just racist and creepy.\u201d<\/p>\n The racial slur is used 20 times in the movie, which took home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.<\/p>\n Tarantino\u2019s use of the N-word has been condemned in the past, especially over his 2012 film Django Unchained<\/em>, which includes over 110 instances in which both Black and white characters use the N-word.<\/p>\n Filmmaker Spike Lee has been an outspoken critic of Tarantino\u2019s decisions, telling Vibe<\/em> magazine about Django<\/em> in 2012 that the language was \u201cdisrespectful to my ancestors.\u201d Following the release of Tarantino\u2019s 1997 movie Jackie Brown<\/em>, Lee said, \u201cI have a definite problem with Quentin Tarantino\u2019s excessive use of the N-word. And let the record state that I never said that he cannot use that word \u2014 I\u2019ve used that word in many of my films \u2014 but I think something is wrong with him.\u201d<\/p>\n Actor Samuel L. Jackson, who starred in Pulp Fiction<\/em> as well as Django Unchained<\/em>, defended Tarantino\u2019s use of the N-word during his appearance in QT8: The First Eight<\/em>, the 2019 documentary about Tarantino\u2019s films.<\/p>\n \u201cYou take 12 Years a Slave<\/em>, which is supposedly made by an auteur. Steve McQueen is very different than Quentin,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cWhen you have a song that says [the N-word] in it 300 times, nobody says s***. So it\u2019s ok for Steve McQueen to use [the N-word] because he\u2019s artistically attacking the system and the way people think and feel, but Quentin is just doing it to just strike the blackboard with his nails?<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s not true. There\u2019s no dishonesty in anything that [Quentin] writes or how people talk, feel, or speak [in his movies].\u201d<\/p>\n Tarantino addressed the backlash against his use of offensive language in 2022, telling critics to watch \u201csomething else.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThen see something else,\u201d the director responded at the time. \u201cIf you have a problem with my movies, then they aren\u2019t the movies to go see.
