Director David Fincher<\/strong> has experienced his share of difficult productions. Perhaps that’s why he works almost exclusively with Netflix these days, commanding huge salaries for projects as varied as the cult classic series Mindhunter<\/strong><\/em>, the video essay show Voir<\/strong><\/em>, and the upcoming tentpole The Adventures of Cliff Booth<\/strong><\/em>. Fincher’s directorial debut was the ill-fated Alien 3<\/em><\/strong>, which he has since disowned because of the studio’s interference during production. Fincher had another difficult experience with Fight Club<\/strong><\/em>, whose marketing he didn’t agree with. But his 2002 thriller presented him with problems that he hadn’t handled previously. The movie is streaming for free in the United States this month.<\/p>\n

It was originally supposed to star Nicole Kidman<\/strong>, who was forced to drop out two weeks into filming because of a pre-existing injury. Fincher was left without a lead and felt as if he were steering a plane toward the ground. To make matters worse, he had a creative conflict with his Se7en<\/em><\/strong> cinematographer, Darius Khondji<\/strong>, who was subsequently replaced by Conrad W. Hall<\/strong>. The movie survived the difficult production and emerged as a massive hit. <\/strong>It also earned solid reviews and proved that Fincher could seamlessly switch from more cerebral filmmaking to commercial fare.<\/p>\n

The movie in question is Panic Room<\/strong><\/em>. It was ultimately headlined by Jodie Foster<\/strong>, who came in as Kidman’s replacement with barely any time to prepare. Panic Room<\/em> also served as an early showcase of Kristen Stewart<\/strong>‘s talents, and featured Jared Leto<\/strong>, Forest Whitaker<\/strong>, and Dwight Yoakam<\/strong> as burglars who break into a house, sending the mother-daughter protagonists into a panic room. Further hurdles arose when Foster discovered that she was pregnant, which forced the filmmakers to change her wardrobe in certain scenes. Produced on a reported budget of just under $50 million, the movie grossed nearly $200 million at the worldwide box office<\/strong>. It’s currently sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 76% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Elevated by David Fincher’s directorial talent and Jodie Foster’s performance, Panic Room<\/em> is a well-crafted, above-average thriller.” Panic Room<\/em> was written by the prolific David Koepp<\/strong> and was briefly supposed to be directed by Ridley Scott<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
