\u201c\u2018I love you. You’ve got this. You look gorgeous.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Olivia Dean<\/strong> tells herself when she looks in the mirror each morning. \u201cI lead with that mentality,\u201d says the singer, who is currently nestled into a plush couch in a hotel suite in downtown San Francisco. \u201cEven though sometimes you might not feel like it, you have to pretend.\u201d It\u2019s clear Dean practices what she preaches: her megahit album is called, of course, The<\/em> Art of Loving,<\/em> and includes songs like \u201cSo Easy (To Fall In Love)\u201d and \u201cI\u2019ve Seen It\u201d that remind listeners that there\u2019s beauty to be found in all forms of love, self-love chief among them.<\/p>\n

The day of our meeting is less than a week after Dean\u2019s Grammys win for Best New Artist\u2014and her excitement remains palpable. \u201cIt\u2019s [only now] just sinking in,\u201d says Dean, as she lights a Diptyque candle. \u201cIt\u2019s been the craziest week of my life.\u201d She has many more crazy-in-a-good-way days ahead, from a performance later that evening to an upcoming (and already sold out) world tour, to the reason we have gathered here today: her appointment as the new global brand partner of Hourglass Cosmetics.<\/p>\n

It was only a matter of time before Dean was tapped by a beauty brand: Her curls tumble down her shoulders in a way that feels effortless and her complexion glows like that of someone who sleeps ten hours a night and spends their days relaxing, not performing at major awards shows. But Dean wants it to be clear: It took lots of experimentation before she landed on her now-signature look. \u201cI think it would be absolutely ridiculous to pretend everyone just immediately knows what their style is. I really think you have to do a lot of trial and error,\u201d she says. \u201cI used to have the craziest eyebrows; I took it really far. Those photos really make me laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, Dean\u2019s beauty philosophy is all about embracing what comes naturally. \u201cI don\u2019t want to feel like a completely different person on stage,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s about me and my everyday life, but just a little more fabulous.\u201d Her beauty influences are vast, but Dean says she admires Audrey Hepburn as well as her \u201cfavorite mother and daughter combo\u201d of Diana and Tracee Ellis Ross. Recently, Dean has also been referencing photos of Bianca Jagger, who \u201creally owns the side part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean\u2019s partnership with Hourglass feels like a natural fit, she says: \u201cIt\u2019s a brand that has been in my life for a really long time already. I remember going into Liberty in London; their brushes were the first set I ever bought. Now, I\u2019ve got all their travel brushes for going on tour.\u201d It\u2019s then that Dean opens her makeup bag, showing off her current favorites. She\u2019s loyal to the Veil Hydrating Skin Tint (\u201cI’m either shade 10 or 11, depending on how much sun I’ve been able to receive,\u201d she says, \u201cToday, 10.\u201d), the lip liner she performed in at the Grammys (one perk of her new gig: it’s a new shade that hasn’t been released yet), and the new Unreal Liquid Highlighter in Infinite, a yellow-toned gold. \u201cI am quite loyal to being a blush lady, but I\u2019ve started doing highlight on top of that, and this one is just gorgeous,\u201d says Dean. \u201cIt makes you look like you just stepped off the beach.\u201d The highlighter and tint are two of the three products (along with the brand\u2019s Vanish Airbrush Concealer) that comprise \u201cThe Olivia Edit,\u201d the first of a series of capsule collections Dean will select for Hourglass as part of her new role.<\/p>\n

With her complexion routine down pat, Dean is looking forward to playing with colorful makeup and changing up her hair styles on her upcoming tour\u2014without sacrificing the health of those signature curls. \u201cMy mom has instilled in me that your hair is your beauty and it’s important to look after it and treat it like it’s your best friend,\u201d says Dean, who cites the Shark FlexStyle dryer as the MVP of her current DIY blowout routine.<\/p>\n

Though she\u2019s making way for evolution, Dean is immensely proud of the visual identity she crafted around her album. \u201cThe visual world for The Art of Loving<\/em> was focused on timelessness; all the glam’s been really natural,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel like I’ll look back on those videos in 20 years time and be like, \u2018Oh, I looked like me and I looked happy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
