“Country Joe” McDonald, the frontman of the band Country Joe and the Fish and a well-known Woodstock performer, passed away over the weekend. He was 84 years old. <\/p>\n
According to Variety, <\/em>the singer, whose real name is Joseph Allen McDonald, died following a battle with Parkinson\u2019s disease. <\/p>\n Born on January 1, 1942, in Washington, D.C., McDonald started his music career in the late 1950s. He is best known for his songs \u201cNot So Sweet Martha Lorraine\u201d and \u201cI-Feel-Like-I\u2019m-Fixin\u2019-to-Die-Rag.\u201d <\/p>\n In 1965, he founded Country Joe and the Fish alongside Barry \u201cThe Fish\u201d Melton. The group also included Gary \u201cChicken\u201d Hirsh, David Bennett Cohen, and Bruce Barthol. <\/p>\n Country Joe and the Fish performed at numerous events, including the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and the original 1969 Woodstock Festival. <\/p>\n The group stayed together until its disbandment in 1971. Each bandmate continued in the music industry and would often reunite. <\/p>\n During his music career, McDonald recorded 33 albums and wrote hundreds of songs. His career spanned over six decades. He even performed at the Woodstock Reunion in 1979. <\/p>\n Although he was scheduled to play at Woodstock\u2019s 50th Anniversary festival, the event was canceled after negotiations fell through. <\/p>\n McDonald is survived by his five children. <\/p>\n During his final interview last summer, McDonald spoke about the moment that \u201cruined\u201d his music career. <\/p>\n While speaking about the \u201cf\u2014- cheer\u201d aka the \u201cFish Cheer\u201d that McDonald was famously known for. <\/p>\n \u201cI have to accept the fact that the F*** cheer really ruined my career,\u201d McDonald admitted. \u201cBut I know people love that. But you know, people love the f\u2014 cheer. They really do.\u201d <\/p>\n However, the musician did acknowledge that his fans loved the cheer. \u201cI guess I\u2019m kind of responsible,\u201d he noted. \u201cI should get a royalty from [that].\u201d <\/p>\n He did note that he and his bandmates tha had \u201cactually trademarked\u201d the \u201cf\u2014 cheer.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cBut it has to be the cheer,\u201d McDonald pointed out. \u201cNot just the word f\u2014.\u201d <\/p>\n McDonald then admitted his one regret as a musician. \u201cI was kind of disappointed that I never got an opportunity to do something like that on a theatrical level.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" “Country Joe” McDonald, the frontman of the band Country Joe and the Fish and a well-known Woodstock performer, passed away over the weekend.
