In 1970, Norman Greenbaum\u2019s<\/strong> life changed when his song \u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d became a hit. The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 18, 1970, just four months after it was released as the first single from the singer-songwriter’s debut 1969 album of the same name. It also ranked on Billboard\u2019s year-end list as one of the top songs of 1970.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d\u00a0went certified gold, with more than two million copies sold from 1969 to 1970, per The New York Times<\/em>. It was the only hit of Greenbaum\u2019s career, confirming his status as a \u201cone-hit wonder.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d is known for its distorted electric guitar riff, which admittedly took Greenbaum a while to perfect. But the real meat of the song\u2014 lyrics filled with religious references\u2014was penned in record time after Greenbaum caught\u00a0Porter Wagoner<\/strong> singing a gospel song on TV.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, ‘Yeah, I could do that,’ knowing nothing about gospel music, so I sat down and wrote my own gospel song,\u201d Greenbaum, now 83, told the Times<\/em> in 2014. \u201cIt came easy. I wrote the words in 15 minutes.”<\/p>\n

Greenbaum shared the backstory on \u2018Spirit in the Sky\u2019<\/h2>\n

In an interview with Rolling Stone,<\/em> Greenbaum, who was raised Jewish, revealed that the idea for \u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d\u00a0came after he saw a greeting card with those four words on it and became intrigued.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just put it in the back of my head,\u201d he said. \u201cThen I happened to be watching Porter Wagoner. He had a TV show, and he did a religious song halfway through the show. \u2026I said to myself, \u2018Well, I\u2019ve never written a religious song. I\u2019ve written some oddball songs, but some serious song, I can do that.\u2019 I just sat down, and it all came together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lyrics came really quick,\u201d he added. \u201cWhen I started putting the music to that, that took a little more time.\u201c<\/p>\n

Greenbaum noted that he received pushback from record company executives when he first presented the Jesus-themed song to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was resistance to releasing \u2018Spirit in the Sky\u2019 as a single,\u201d the songwriter told the Times. \u201cFirst of all, it was too long. It\u2019s about four minutes. Plus, it was so weird. Here\u2019s a Jew singing about Jesus with this fuzz box going \u2018brrrrrr.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

It also didn\u2019t sound like anything else on the radio at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first the record company said, \u2018Gee, they don\u2019t play anything like this on Top 20,’\u201d Greenbaum told Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cBut obviously they were wrong. We always knew it was going to be a hit. It just sounded too good.\u201d<\/p>\n

A resurgence in the \u201880s<\/h2>\n

More than 15 years after its release, \u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d got a boost when it was featured on the soundtrack to the film Maid to Order<\/em>. The musical cameo in the Ally Sheedy<\/strong> film led to more movie and advertising deals for everything from Apollo 13<\/em> to Toyota commercials.<\/p>\n

Greenbaum receives a check each time his song is used. \u201cBecause of \u2018Spirit in the Sky,\u2019 I don\u2019t have to work,\u201d he said in the 2014 interview.<\/p>\n

As for that one-hit wonder label, Greenbaum has said he has no problem with it. \u201cRather than just a song, it\u2019s become an amazing piece of work,\u201d he once said in an interview published by The Daily Democrat<\/em>. \u201cWhen you write songs, you don\u2019t expect them to last almost 50 years and get so much attention.\u201d<\/p>\n
