The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 18, 1970, just four months after it was released as the first single from the singer-songwriter&#8217;s debut 1969 album of the same name. It also ranked on Billboard\u2019s year-end list as one of the top songs of 1970.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d\u00a0went certified gold, with more than two million copies sold from 1969 to 1970, per <em style=\"text-align: justify\">The New York Times<\/em>. It was the only hit of Greenbaum\u2019s career, confirming his status as a \u201cone-hit wonder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d is known for its distorted electric guitar riff, which admittedly took Greenbaum a while to perfect. But the real meat of the song\u2014 lyrics filled with religious references\u2014was penned in record time after Greenbaum caught\u00a0<strong style=\"text-align: justify\">Porter Wagoner<\/strong> singing a gospel song on TV.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cI thought, &#8216;Yeah, I could do that,&#8217; knowing nothing about gospel music, so I sat down and wrote my own gospel song,\u201d Greenbaum, now 83, told the <em style=\"text-align: justify\">Times<\/em> in 2014. \u201cIt came easy. I wrote the words in 15 minutes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img data-document-id=\"cms\/api\/amp\/video\/AA1Hube1\" data-reference=\"video\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\">Greenbaum shared the backstory on \u2018Spirit in the Sky\u2019<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In an interview with <em style=\"text-align: justify\">Rolling Stone,<\/em> Greenbaum, who was raised Jewish, revealed that the idea for \u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d\u00a0came after he saw a greeting card with those four words on it and became intrigued.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cI just put it in the back of my head,\u201d he said. \u201cThen I happened to be watching Porter Wagoner. He had a TV show, and he did a religious song halfway through the show. \u2026I said to myself, \u2018Well, I\u2019ve never written a religious song. I\u2019ve written some oddball songs, but some serious song, I can do that.\u2019 I just sat down, and it all came together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThe lyrics came really quick,\u201d he added. \u201cWhen I started putting the music to that, that took a little more time.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong style=\"text-align: justify\">RELATED:\u00a0 Iconic \u201870s Hit Gets Its First Official Music Video 55 Years Later<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Greenbaum noted that he received pushback from record company executives when he first presented the Jesus-themed song to them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThere was resistance to releasing \u2018Spirit in the Sky\u2019 as a single,\u201d the songwriter told the Times. \u201cFirst of all, it was too long. It\u2019s about four minutes. Plus, it was so weird. Here\u2019s a Jew singing about Jesus with this fuzz box going \u2018brrrrrr.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It also didn\u2019t sound like anything else on the radio at the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAt first the record company said, \u2018Gee, they don\u2019t play anything like this on Top 20,&#8217;\u201d Greenbaum told <em style=\"text-align: justify\">Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cBut obviously they were wrong. We always knew it was going to be a hit. It just sounded too good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong style=\"text-align: justify\">RELATED: 1966 Monkees Hit Featured a Producer\u2019s Scream You May Have Missed<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\">A resurgence in the \u201880s<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">More than 15 years after its release, \u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d got a boost when it was featured on the soundtrack to the film <em style=\"text-align: justify\">Maid to Order<\/em>.
