Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes seem like one of Hollywood\u2019s most solid couples, even though they keep most of their romantic life pretty private. They first sparked dating rumors in 2011 while filming The Place Beyond the Pines<\/em> and have been going strong ever since. Here, we look back at their connection over the last decade and beyond.<\/p>\n

August 2011<\/h2>\n

The couple were friends for many years before they started dating, according to Oprah Mag<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had known each other for a while already, so to work together was really exciting,\u201d Mendes said of filming The Place Beyond the Pines<\/em> in New York together. But soon, they seemed to be spending a lot of time together for just friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always been this strong chemistry between them\u2026this was just a matter of time!\u201d said a source on set.<\/p>\n

September 2011<\/h2>\n

In September of that year, the pair were seen smooching at Disneyland. An observer told Us Weekly<\/em> how flirty they were.<\/p>\n

Like Zendaya and Tom Holland, Gosling and Mendes got busted while making out at a stoplight in Hollywood. Soon after, they flew out to Paris together.<\/p>\n

The next summer, the couple visited Gosling\u2019s native country, Canada, and spent time with his mother, Donna. Donna was apparently a big fan of Mendes.<\/p>\n

The Place Beyond the Pines <\/em>premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and the couple posed on the red carpet together.<\/p>\n

Soon after, TMZ refuted the story.<\/p>\n

In 2011, Mendes had told Chelsea Handler, \u201cI\u2019m not like anti-marriage or the institution, like for other people. And I love the idea of a union\u2014that\u2019s all very beautiful. But I think, you know, it\u2019s a very old fashioned, archaic kind of thing. We did it for land originally. How unromantic is that?\u201d<\/p>\n

On November 15, Mendes shared her new inner-wrist tattoo on Instagram, a design that spells \u201cde Gosling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mendes, who was raised by her Cuban parents in Miami, may be referring to the tradition of adding a husband\u2019s last name onto the woman\u2019s original name after their marriage, using \u201cde\u201d or \u201cof.\u201d If Mendes and Gosling were married, her name could be Eva Mendes de Gosling. Fans took the tattoo as a sign that Mendes and Gosling are secretly hitched.<\/p>\n

Mendes then made an appearance on Australia\u2019s Kyle and Jackie O Show<\/em>, where they naturally asked about the tattoo. Co-host Brittany Hockley asked directly, \u201cThere\u2019s a rumor that you guys might have secretly tied the knot. Is that true?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mendes replied, \u201cBut who says we weren\u2019t already? I like to keep it all mysterious. I\u2019m a very mysterious woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

About the tattoo, she said, \u201cI do have a tattoo. It\u2019s just a press on\u2026no, it\u2019s not a press on. But I got it years ago. I posted a picture, and I\u2019ve gotten a lot of funny questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mendes explained why she and Gosling don\u2019t do red carpets together to a user on Instagram expressing hope that they would appear together on the Barbie <\/em>press tour.<\/p>\n

During his press tour in Canada for his new movie Barbie<\/em>, Gosling shared what it\u2019s like to be the \u201cBarbie dad\u201d to his two daughters who apparently have \u201ccomplicated backstories\u201d for their dolls. On June 29, he shared that Esmeralda and Amada like to make up their own universe while talking to ET Canada<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you have to know, my kids, their Barbies aren\u2019t even named Barbie,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey all have their own names, very complicated lives, backstories, interrelationships, history, you gotta know it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

He joked that when he jumped into play he was informed the dolls were \u201cestranged now\u201d and that \u201cit\u2019s like, \u2018Get out of here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t even talk!\u201d he added, explaining that in his daughter\u2019s Barbie world, Ken has been demoted.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe works at a grocery store; he\u2019s not a fireman,\u201d Gosling said.<\/p>\n

July 2023<\/h2>\n

Gosling wore a tribute to Mendes at the Barbie <\/em>Los Angeles premiere: an \u201cE\u201d necklace in the Barbie font. He spoke to Entertainment Tonight<\/em> about how the couple\u2019s daughters influenced the way he played Ken.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve seen a lot pieces of [the film], and helped me a lot with it,\u201d he said. \u201cThey were huge inspiration for me.\u201d He also added that he may wait to take them to see the movie: \u201cWell, it was, I think, weird enough for them that I played Ken anyway. I might like, you know, just hold off on them seeing the full Ken energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Friday, July 14, Gosling shared more about his family in an interview with People<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they\u2019re confused as to why I would want to play Ken,\u201d he said. \u201cThey have no use for Ken.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gosling went on, \u201cMy kids were my introduction to [Barbie]…My kids were around for the months at home, as I was prepping for it. So they, inadvertently, were prepping for it too. And they came to set that day and were a huge sense of support and doing it with me off-camera.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Mendes posted a short video clip of herself on Instagram, captioned, \u201cWhen my kids ask me if they\u2019re old enough to go on the internet, social media or anything requiring Wi-Fi.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the video, she is shaking her head and waving her hands in a very clear \u201cno,\u201d because she apparently tries to keep her two daughters off the Internet. In the comments, Mendes responded to her followers, explaining why she and Gosling are so strict.<\/p>\n

First, someone wrote, \u201cYour smart @evamendes. I have limited it a lot for my now 10-year-old but feel like your way is better.\u201d<\/p>\n

She replied, \u201cI\u2019m just sharing what I feel now, but I know it\u2019s gonna get harder as they get older. So, I hear ya, mama. I let my kids use the iPad to make movies and watch films I\u2019ve downloaded, but I don\u2019t have internet access on the iPad. Lotsa love your way, fellow mama!\u201d<\/p>\n

A second comment said, \u201cWe are in the internet century, so eventually everyone will need or want to access the internet, sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, true, but in my house, children do not have access to the Internet,\u201d Mendes answered. \u201cIt\u2019s too dangerous. Just like drinking or voting or getting a driver\u2019s license (etc.) isn\u2019t allowed for children, the Internet falls under that category for me. Especially social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

One fan asked, \u201cAt what age do you think you\u2019ll allow them to use [the] internet\/social media?\u201d<\/p>\n

She explained, \u201cHonestly, I don\u2019t know. I\u2019ll have to see where it goes. For now, I\u2019m observing them and keeping up with research about how social media can impact a child\u2019s brain. I\u2019m taking it stage by stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

December 2023<\/h2>\n

Gosling released four new renditions of his Barbie<\/em> anthem \u201cI\u2019m Just Ken\u201d with musical artist Mark Ronson. Mendes was ecstatic for her husband and shared several clips on Instagram.<\/p>\n

Dead Man\u2019s Bones is the name of Gosling\u2019s former rock band he founded with Zach Shields in 2009.<\/p>\n

In the comments, fans were almost as excited, asking Mendes not to refer to her husband as \u201cmy man,\u201d but instead \u201cour man.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was surprisingly willing to comply, saying, \u201cYou\u2019re right! Our Man. It\u2019ll never happen again. Merry Christmas! Lots of love!!\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, January 13, Gosling accepted the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. While giving his speech, he made sure to mention Mendes and their two children and how movies gave him his family\u2014he did meet Mendes on set, after all.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost importantly, I got to meet the girl of my dreams, Eva Mendes, and have two dream children,\u201d said Gosling. \u201cI dreamed of one day making movies, and now, movies have made my life a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

A source spoke to Us Weekly<\/em> about Gosling and Mendes\u2019s life together. \u201cThey are trying to keep their daughters\u2019 lives as normal as possible and don\u2019t want them growing up in Hollywood,\u201d one source said.<\/p>\n

Both are supportive of the other\u2019s career too, a second source said: \u201cRyan always encourages Eva to pursue the projects she believes in and gladly steps up to the plate to take care of the kids whenever she needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

With their daughters, \u201che reads to the kids, takes them to games, puts them to sleep, cooks their dinners\u2014everything, really. He devotes almost all his time to his family. He enjoys taking care of the girls and spoiling Eva, too,\u201d that source said.<\/p>\n

That second source shared a bit about their dynamic as a couple: \u201cRyan loves to cook for Eva, and once the kids are asleep, they\u2019ll enjoy one of their favorite shows together.\u201d While they will sometimes go out for date nights, \u201c[they] prefer hikes and trips to the beach over fancy restaurants or a big party,\u201d the insider finished.<\/p>\n

Mendes supported Gosling backstage at the Oscars, sharing two Instagrams of herself there. \u201cAlways by my man,\u201d she captioned her first one.<\/p>\n

On March 11, a source explained to People<\/em> why Mendes and Gosling moved their family out of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor them, the most important job is their girls,\u201d the source said. \u201cEverything else comes second. And their girls are thriving. They left L.A. to live a bit further north, away from Hollywood. They didn\u2019t want the girls to grow up around other celebrity kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

They added that \u201cEva and Ryan love their life. It\u2019s admirable how they\u2019ve been able to create balance and boundaries. They care so much about their marriage and just want their girls to live a happy life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gosling gave an interview to People<\/em> on March 12 where he revealed that Mendes did not attend the Oscars but a dress rehearsal for it with their daughters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was great,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was so fun because they came to the dress rehearsal the day before and so they were in the front row. They gave me some tips and some notes, all great notes. They are such a huge part of this for me…it was my girls\u2019 interest in Barbie and disinterest in Ken that got me into this in the first place. On Thursday, March 14, after showing so much support for her husband, Mendes posted about getting some time for fun at Milan Fashion Week. It was her first time attending since the birth of her kids. In a short video she posted of herself enjoying \u201cLa Dolce Evita,\u201d Mendes thanked Gosling for stepping up as a parent so she could take a break.<\/p>\n

She started by saying her looked was \u201cmade possible\u201d by fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, her stylists, and \u201cby my man for holding down the fort at home so I could live the Dolce Evita for a couple days.\u201d<\/p>\n

I just didn\u2019t act because acting takes you on locations; it takes you away. The actress also reflected on her time working with her future husband on The Place Beyond the Pines. <\/em><\/p>\n

While Gosling and Mendes typically keep their relationship relatively private, they each opened up about their lives together while doing press.<\/p>\n

In conversation with People<\/em> for the Beautiful issue, Mendes praised Gosling for being so supportive, saying, \u201cHe\u2019s got me in all the ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because of his support, Mendes was able to step away from acting to raise their two daughters, Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 8.<\/p>\n

Mendes also shared that Gosling is the chef of the household.<\/p>\n

The couple brought their daughter to watch the Women\u2019s Uneven Bars final at the Paris Olympics on August 4. Gosling wore a green Olympics hat and plaid shirt, and Mendes was in a sleeveless black shirt and white sunglasses. They were also seen at the Palace of Versailles for an equestrian event, where Gosling wore a white baseball cap, and Mendes wore a straw sunhat.<\/p>\n

Mendes spoke on Good Morning America<\/em> about how working with Gosling led her to quit acting, perhaps for good. She was asked if she\u2019d take up the profession again now that their daughters are a little older. \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d she replied, via Entertainment Weekly<\/em>. \u201cIf there\u2014you know\u2014if there\u2019s interesting roles. I kinda felt like I did it, ya know? I was like, I just worked with Ryan Gosling, who\u2019s, like, the best. Mendes shut down rumors that she and Gosling had relocated to London with their two daughters. In a November 3 Instagram Story, the actress reposted a screenshot of a Daily Mail<\/em> article and wrote, \u201cWRONG again @dailymail. Although I love my time in London, I can\u2019t wait to get back home and celebrate the @dodgers World Series championship!\u201d She added, \u201cGo Dodgers!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with Access Hollywood<\/em> about his film, Project Hail Mary<\/em>, Gosling made rare comments about his kids and shared that they view his work.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids have seen multiple cuts,\u201d Gosling said. \u201cThey give me multiple notes. They\u2019re basically the only critics I care about, and they are very critical and very honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that their opinions are \u201calways better,\u201d and they inspire his work.<\/p>\n

Mendes joined Gosling onstage during his The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/em> interview on March 5, marking their first official public appearance in more than a decade. During the episode, Gosling surprised Mendes, who had been watching the interview backstage, with a birthday celebration.<\/p>\n

Before she came out, Gosling joked to the audience, \u201cHere\u2019s the thing, you might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n
