Kelly Clarkson waited until the final seconds of a Blind Audition in The Voice<\/i> season 29 before turning her chair for contestant Houston Kelly. The Memphis, Tennessee singer performed \u201cWalking in Memphis,\u201d prompting Clarkson to hit her button at the last moment and secure him for her team.<\/p>\n

Clarkson had been cautious about filling the final spots on her team during the Blind Auditions of The Voice. <\/i>With only two openings remaining, she was specifically looking for artists capable of earning multiple chair turns.<\/p>\n

The strategy related to the show\u2019s \u201cSuper Steal\u201d advantage during the Battle rounds, which goes to the coach whose team has the most three-chair-turn contestants.<\/p>\n

Houston Kelly\u2019s performance ultimately convinced Clarkson to act, even though she admitted she hesitated until the very end of the audition.\u00a0 After turning her chair, Clarkson said,<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so close. I\u2019m sweating. I\u2019ve never waited that long. I literally was thinking, \u2018I already have country,\u2019 but then I was like, \u2018Wow, but nobody sounds like this though.\u2019 You are so talented.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Houston Kelly\u2019s audition became one of the memorable moments of The Voice<\/i> season 29 Blind Auditions. The singer accompanied himself on piano while performing \u201cWalking in Memphis,\u201d a song closely tied to the city where he grew up.<\/p>\n

During the conversation with the coaches on The Voice<\/i>, Houston Kelly explained that country music shaped his early musical interests. He said,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first started, my dad and I would ride around in his pickup truck listening to Alabama\u2018s Greatest Hits CD. I think that\u2019s where it all started for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Clarkson\u2019s eventual chair turn came after she carefully considered whether adding another country artist to her team would make sense. At that point in The Voice<\/i> season 29, she already had artists in that genre.<\/p>\n

Despite that, the uniqueness of Houston Kelly\u2019s voice persuaded her to take the chance.<\/p>\n

The other coaches also reacted strongly to the performance. Adam Levine immediately recognized how deeply Houston Kelly\u2019s style leaned into traditional country influences.<\/p>\n

During the exchange on The Voice,<\/i> Levine said,<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s so country, I don\u2019t even know what to do about it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Clarkson joked that Houston Kelly might have chosen a different coach if former The Voice<\/i> coach Blake Shelton were still part of the show. Clarkson said,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I love most is that Blake Shelton isn\u2019t here because if he was, I know you\u2019d pick him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Levine said,<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Blake were here, it would be already over.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cBut he\u2019s not, so I\u2019m very excited,\u201d Clarkson continued.<\/p>\n

John Legend also referenced Shelton\u2019s lasting presence on The Voice <\/i>even after his departure from the coaching panel. He said,<\/p>\n

\u201cHis ghost haunts us every day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Clarkson replied,<\/p>\n

\u201cHe does. He has that effect that lingers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Levine later acknowledged that Clarkson\u2019s late decision to turn her chair effectively ended his chances of recruiting Houston Kelly. Levine said,<\/p>\n

\u201cShe turned at the last second and blew our minds. I was thinking about it, too, right when she did it, and then I was like, \u2018This is an uphill battle for me that I\u2019m going to lose.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Levine also teased Clarkson about the way she adjusted her speaking style when talking to country performers. He asked,<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you notice how she gets a little more country when she starts to talk to a country artist?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Clarkson responded with a laugh. She said,<\/p>\n

\u201cI get real country when I talk to my sister because she\u2019s from North Carolina and that\u2019s a different dialect.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Legend also praised Houston Kelly\u2019s performance during the Blind Audition segment of The Voice<\/i> season 29. Legend said,<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you gave a really strong performance. Your voice has so much power to it. Kelly\u2019s going to be a great coach. I\u2019m so excited for you, Houston.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Clarkson later reflected on the decision to bring Houston Kelly onto her team, explaining what stood out about the singer\u2019s voice. She said,<\/p>\n

\u201cHouston was amazing. What I loved about Houston\u2019s voice was that he has this big, round tone, and I love that his name was Houston Kelly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

At that stage of The Voice <\/i>season 29, Clarkson still had one remaining slot left on her team and was considering what type of artist she hoped to add next. Clarkson said,<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI have one spot left, and I really want something special. Right now, I have country, singer-songwriter, it\u2019s kind of all over the map, but I am looking for soulful pop. I would really like someone to fill it out in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Voice<\/i> airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET\/PT on NBC and streams the next day on Peacock.<\/p>\n
