Tina Trahan\u2019s husband had one question when she spent $3.2 million on the \u201cBrady Bunch\u201d house: \u201cHave you lost your mind?\u201d<\/p>\n

After a two-year campaign she spearheaded, the modest Studio City home used for the exterior shots of the beloved 1970s sitcom has officially been granted Historic-Cultural Monument status by the Los Angeles City Council.<\/p>\n

But it was an expensive journey to get the house ready for the limelight. <\/p>\n

For Trahan, the effort began shortly after she bought the property in 2023 for $3.2 million.<\/p>\n

She had spotted the listing while browsing Zillow and immediately recognized the iconic split-level ranch home from the show\u2019s opening credits \u2014 the triangular roofline, stacked stone facade and large picture window instantly transporting her back to childhood afternoons watching reruns.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like you walked into your childhood home when you were 10-years-old,\u201d Trahan said. \u201cNo one can get this feeling anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trahan, who grew up in the Chicago suburbs, said she watched \u201cThe Brady Bunch\u201d constantly as a kid \u2014 even though it wasn\u2019t technically her favorite sitcom. She says that honor is reserved for \u201cThree\u2019s Company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the emotional pull of the house was undeniable, \u201cI have to have it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Not everyone agreed.<\/p>\n

Her husband, former HBO chief Chris Albrecht \u2014 who oversaw shows like \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d and \u201cSex and the City\u201d \u2014 initially thought the idea was absurd.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018Have you lost your mind?\u2019\u201d Trahan recalled in an interview with LAist. \u201cHe thought I wanted to move into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Living there, she said, was never the plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if someone drops a meatball on the sofa or something?\u201d she said. \u201cI would have a nervous breakdown.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Trahan turned the house into a carefully preserved pop-culture time capsule.<\/p>\n

Over the past two years she has added roughly 400 props and Easter eggs referencing moments from the show \u2014 including the flashlight Greg once used to fake a UFO sighting and a stuffed giraffe like the one that appeared in the girls\u2019 bedroom. She even had three different giraffes custom made before settling on the right size.<\/p>\n

The interior itself already closely resembled the show\u2019s set after HGTV renovated the property for its 2019 series \u201cA Very Brady Renovation,\u201d re-creating the famous floating staircase and other recognizable rooms.<\/p>\n

But Trahan worried about the house\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if I get hit by a bus tomorrow?\u201d she said. \u201cIs there anything I can do to preserve this?\u201d<\/p>\n

That question led her to pursue landmark status \u2014 a process she said took two years and several rounds of city approvals.<\/p>\n

Architectural historian Heather Goers helped prepare the nomination and shepherd it through the Cultural Heritage Commission, the City Council\u2019s Planning and Land Use Management Committee and finally the full council vote.<\/p>\n

The designation is notable because the house is the first property in Los Angeles to receive landmark protection specifically for its significance as a filming location outside of a studio lot.<\/p>\n

Though the home was built in 1959 and only its exterior appeared in the sitcom, officials ultimately extended the landmark designation to the interior as well.<\/p>\n

Trahan said she was stunned when that happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure there are people who are like, \u2018But wait \u2014 that\u2019s not historical,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The decision reflects the enduring impact of the show, which debuted in 1969 and has been in near-constant syndication since its original run ended in 1974.<\/p>\n

Today the house draws a steady stream of visitors to its quiet San Fernando Valley street, with fans pulling up daily to snap photos.<\/p>\n

Trahan has also opened the property for charity tours and events called \u201cThe Brady Experience,\u201d often featuring cast members such as Christopher Knight and Maureen McCormick.<\/p>\n

Becoming the owner of an official Los Angeles landmark hasn\u2019t changed much for Trahan \u2014 except for one unexpected headache.<\/p>\n

Her insurance company dropped coverage after the designation became public.<\/p>\n

Historic homes can be more complicated and expensive to insure, she said.<\/p>\n
