Michelle Obama celebrated her Chicagoan roots in a throwback post on Instagram. Ahead of the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, the former First Lady reminisced on growing up in the Windy City.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 <\/p>\n
On Instagram, Obama shared a reel featuring throwback photos of herself as a child with her mom, Marian Robinson, her dad, Fraser C. Robinson III, and her brother, Craig Robinson.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She wrote on Instagram:<\/p>\n
\n“Chicago will always be home. It\u2019s where Craig and I grew up. Where Barack and I met and fell in love. Where we taught our girls to tie their shoes and reach for the stars. Where the ride of a lifetime took root\u2014and took off.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The Becoming<\/i> author added that it was an easy decision to build the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park, Chicago.<\/p>\n
Obama added that the OPC set to be unveiled in June 2026 was built as \u201ca way of giving back to the community that has given us so much.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also described the Obama Center as a tribute to those who have supported the Obama family and a \u201claunchpad for the next generation of young leaders who are going to change the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
She concluded:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe hope it will be a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can visit Chicago, connect with each other, and walk away believing even more in yourself \u2014 and in what we all can accomplish together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“One of the greatest honors of my life is being a proud Chicagoan,” Michelle Obama said at OPC groundbreaking ceremony\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Obama Presidential Center in 2021, Michelle Obama emphasized that being a Chicagoan is something of great pride to her, despite her other accomplishments:<\/p>\n
\n“No matter what I\u2019ve accomplished, who I\u2019ve met, or where I\u2019ve gone, one of the greatest honors of my life is being a proud Chicagoan, a daughter of the South Side.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The American attorney and author stated that building the Obama Center in Chicago would house memories from the Obamas’ eight years in the White House.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 <\/p>\n
According to her, it was also a substantial investment in their hometown and a vital resource for its residents.<\/p>\n
The Obama Center is a 19.3-acre site featuring a museum, a Chicago public library branch, a Great Lawn, and a home court, among others. It will be officially open on June 19, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n
