Elijah Wood has addressed speculation about whether he will reprise his role as Frodo Baggins in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum<\/em>, saying he would not want another actor to portray the character while he is still able to do so.<\/p>\n In an interview with The Times U.K.<\/em>, Wood spoke about the possibility of returning to Middle-earth for the project directed by Andy Serkis. While he did not confirm his involvement, he acknowledged growing anticipation around the film.<\/p>\n \u201cIan kind of spilled the beans at a convention last August, so there\u2019s a good chance,\u201d Wood said, referring to comments previously made by co-star Ian McKellen. \u201cI can\u2019t officially confirm anything until it\u2019s announced, but I\u2019m thrilled about the prospect of another film.\u201d<\/p>\n Wood added that fans tend to be protective of J.R.R. Tolkien\u2019s fictional world when new projects are announced.<\/p>\n \u201cFans get protective when new Middle-earth projects are discussed, hoping they\u2019ll maintain the integrity of the world,\u201d he said. \u201cBut this story is exciting and fun. There\u2019s a sense of getting the old gang back together.\u201d<\/p>\n The upcoming film is expected to explore events that occur between the timeline of The Hobbit<\/em> trilogy and the opening of The Lord of the Rings<\/em>. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are developing the project with Andy Serkis directing.<\/p>\n Asked about McKellen\u2019s earlier comment that he would prefer to continue playing Gandalf rather than see another actor take on the role, Wood said he understands the sentiment.<\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn\u2019t want anyone else playing Frodo either, as long as I\u2019m alive and able,\u201d Wood said.<\/p>\n Wood first portrayed Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson\u2019s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring<\/em> in 2001. He reprised the role in the two sequels, helping bring Tolkien\u2019s story of the One Ring to global audiences.<\/p>\n He later returned briefly to the role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey<\/em> in 2012.<\/p>\n The upcoming film will reunite several figures behind the earlier trilogies.
