A crowd gathered outside Barrel House in Washington, D.C. for a lighthearted competition celebrating one of America’s most recognizable political figures: John F. Kennedy Jr. <\/p>\n

The event invited contestants to see who most resembled the late public figure, with participants stepping on stage one by one as spectators cheered them on. <\/p>\n

Organizers said the idea for the contest came after renewed interest in JFK Jr. sparked by the Hulu series “Love Story.” <\/p>\n

\u201cThis was my friend\u2019s idea to host this,\u201d said Lucy Nu\u00f1ez, a dating matchmaker who helped organize the event. \u201cShe got inspired by the Love Story series on Hulu. I just watched it and loved it as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nu\u00f1ez said the event was also inspired by similar look-alike contests happening in other cities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been loving watching the look-alike contests all over the country,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t think we have enough in D.C., so I was so happy to bring a little bit of joy and frivolity to D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the crowd cast its votes, contestant Matthew Orgera was named the winner of the JFK Jr. look-alike contest.<\/p>\n

Orgera said he initially entered the contest at the encouragement of friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friends told me I should come out for it, and I got it sent to me,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was cool. They are in there supporting me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nu\u00f1ez said the continued fascination with Kennedy stems from both his public legacy and cultural image.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s because people really love the legacy of JFK Jr.,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s not only handsome, but he represents so many different things about masculinity that I think women long for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Orgera acknowledged the renewed attention on Kennedy and his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, whose lives and tragic deaths have remained a topic of public interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey lived pretty private lives and ended in a tragic way,\u201d Orgera said. \u201cThis is all a dramatization for entertainment, but it\u2019s bringing them back to cultural relevance. They\u2019re icons in their own right.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the comparison to Kennedy, Orgera said he\u2019s heard it before.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been told in the past that I look like JFK Jr. a little bit,\u201d he said. \u201cSince the show came out, I\u2019ve heard it more. I\u2019m flattered. I\u2019ll take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
