Having meaningful baseball to watch all day long is bliss, folks. Saturday’s World Baseball Classic action had a little bit of everything. Seiya Suzuki popped two homers in the wee hours of the morning to start the day and Kyle Schwarber and Team USA closed it out with a commanding 9-1 win over Great Britain.<\/p>\n
Team USA has an off day Sunday before returning to action with a matchup against Mexico Monday night, with reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes slated to take the ball. <\/p>\n
There were probably some mixed feelings when Cubs fans saw Owen Caissie connect on his second World Baseball Classic home run Saturday, landing squarely in a Canadian flag fans in the right-field bleachers were holding.<\/p>\n
Given it’s been mere months since the Cubs traded Caissie to Miami in exchange for Edward Cabrera, the jury is still out on the trade – but, regardless, it was a really cool moment that was capped with a reaction that quickly picked up steam on social media.<\/p>\n
Caissie has a clear runway to everyday at-bats in Miami, something he didn’t have in Chicago. How he fares in his first full MLB season will be a non-Cubs storyline fans will surely keep an eye on this year. Let’s just hope he hits the skids whenever the Marlins battle the North Siders.<\/p>\n
There was a bit of concern online when Great Britain’s Nate Eaton took Tarik Skubal deep on the first pitch of the game – but a mid-game offensive outburst quickly put this game out of reach for the visitors, with Team USA cruising to a 9-1 win.<\/p>\n
Current and former helped lead the way offensively. Alex Bregman added a hit, drew a walk and drove in two, Pete Crow-Armstrong scored a pair of runs and had a big knock and Brad Keller closed things out in the ninth, punching out a pair of hitters in a clean frame.<\/p>\n
But the biggest moment came in the fifth, when Kyle Schwarber delivered a crushing blow for the Stars and Stripes – a go-ahead, 427-foot blast deep into the upper deck that brought 34,000+ at Daikin Park to their feet.<\/p>\n
Being on the receiving end of a Schwarber home run is nothing new for Great Britain – he knocked them flat in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, as well. And, frankly, few pitchers are immune from his power stroke. The former Cubs’ first-rounder popped a league-leading 56 homers last season, turning another impressive campaign into a new five-year, $150 million deal with the Phillies.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
